In the spring of last

year a newly formed club. _ called the Athletic Club, applied for a lease of the Bowrington Gardens - about 7 acres in ~ extent - which they proposed

to convert into tennis courts,
tracks etc.- and,
running
apparently overlooking the ~ contemplated scheme of adding these gardens to the public recreation ground_ Mr Fleming promised the Club a lease of the gardens for 7 year
at a nominal rent.
